Life Transitions & Stress Management

Life is full of change — some expected, others completely out of the blue. Even good changes can bring stress, anxiety, and uncertainty. Transitions often stretch us, challenge our identity, and impact our emotional well-being. Whether you're a student facing new pressures, a young adult finding your footing, or someone stepping into a new chapter of life, you're not alone in feeling overwhelmed.

Stress is a normal part of growth — but when it begins to affect your mood, health, or relationships, it’s time to pause and check in.

What Life Transitions Might Look Like

Here are just a few of the transitions that can stir up stress or emotional upheaval:

  • Starting middle school, high school, or college
  • Navigating friendship changes or social pressure
  • Leaving home or adjusting to dorm life
  • Choosing a major or career path
  • Entering the workforce or changing jobs
  • Moving to a new city or state
  • Getting married or adjusting to shared life
  • Experiencing a breakup or divorce
  • Shifts in faith, identity, or purpose
  • Financial independence or instability
  • Health challenges or a new diagnosis
  • Loss of a loved one or changes in family roles
  • Becoming a parent or navigating infertility
  • Feeling “stuck” or unsure of what’s next

No matter your age or stage, life transitions can feel like your foundation has shifted. It’s okay to struggle, even if everything on paper seems like it “should” be exciting.

How Stress Can Show Up

Stress doesn’t always look like panic or burnout. It often shows up in quiet or subtle ways, including:

  • Difficulty focusing or staying motivated
  • Feeling emotionally drained or irritable
  • Changes in appetite, sleep, or energy
  • Constant overthinking or self-doubt
  • Avoiding responsibilities or procrastinating
  • Feeling alone even when surrounded by others
  • Worrying that you’re “behind” or not enough
  • Crying easily or feeling emotionally numb
